REMS uses ultrasound technology to assess the lumbar spine and femoral neck without ionizing radiation.
Sessions are offered every two to three months at OsteoStrong Roslyn, based on demand. A visiting BOSTDIA technician performs the scans, and appointments are limited.

QUICK BENEFITS
REMS stands for Radiofrequency Echographic Multi Spectrometry — an ultrasound-based approach to assessing bone health. Unlike imaging methods that rely on ionizing radiation, REMS uses sound waves to gather information about bone density and bone quality at the lumbar spine and femoral neck.
The scan is non-invasive and radiation-free, making it a comfortable option for people who want an additional way to understand their bone health as part of an ongoing wellness routine.

DXA remains a widely used and trusted method for bone health assessment. REMS offers another way to gather information about bone density and quality, using a different technology. The comparison below is intended to help you understand how each approach works — not to suggest one replaces the other.
| Criteria | REMS | DXA |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Ultrasound-based | X-ray-based |
| Radiation | Radiation-free | Uses ionizing radiation |
| Areas Assessed | Lumbar spine, femoral neck | Lumbar spine, hip (varies by protocol) |
| Portability | Portable — technician can visit the location | Typically requires a fixed imaging suite |
| Information Provided | Bone density and bone quality insights | Bone mineral density (T-score/Z-score) |
| Role in Bone Health Assessment | One tool among several for understanding bone health | An established, widely used reference method |
This comparison is provided for educational purposes only and does not indicate that one method is superior to the other. Please discuss which assessment is right for you with your doctor or healthcare provider.
